Small Wins, Big Impact: Why Self-Celebration Is a Form of Self-Care
There I was, sitting in the heat of the blazing sun, surrounded by hundreds of cheering family members and all I could think about was you.
One of the highlights this past week was being present to celebrate my nephew's graduation from Morehouse College. I am so proud of him and everything he has accomplished. I’m also proud to have watched my sister and her husband for all they have poured into him and their children. Watching him grow from a baby into a man, stepping into his own while following his dreams, has been truly surreal.
With graduation in full mode,, I sat back in the Atlanta sun and watched parents, family, and friends rush to catch a glimpse of their loved ones having their names called as they walked across that stage. As I reflect on sitting in the heat for hours for that moment of glory, I want to remind you to celebrate your wins.
Don't just remember to celebrate them, be intentional about making the time. We treat milestones like graduation with such seriousness because we understand the work, the time, the effort, and the energy that went into reaching that moment. We know what that sacrifice looked like, and we've been there through every step of the journey. But sometimes, we don't extend that same celebration to ourselves.
We know this, but we don't always act on it.
So today, I want to remind you to celebrate your wins. Acknowledge your accomplishments. Stop being so hard on yourself while you're out here celebrating everyone else.
It doesn't matter how small it is. If it's meaningful to you, it's worth celebrating. It's worth acknowledging. It's worth a pat on your own back. Especially, when some of those "smaller" things took everything you had just to get started.
Whether it's:
Disciplining yourself to skip that extra dessert
Losing 5 pounds
Staying consistent at the gym
Spearheading that project at work
Earning that promotion
Setting better boundaries with family and friends
Carving out a day of rest that's truly just for you
Finally going to therapy
All of these small things add up. They create big impact in the long run. But you won't reach the bigger steps without first taking the small ones.
Give yourself the strength and willpower to keep going by recognizing how far you've already come. Give yourself the confidence to keep putting one foot in front of the other.
So here's to you. Here's to your wins, and here's to all your upcoming victories. You go, girl!
