Speak the Truth: How to Replace Fear With God’s Word
One minute you’re up high, having fun, the next you’re down in the dumps worried about the uncertainty of the future.
That’s how I was when I received some not so great news from the doctor. Nothing life threatening, just enough to punch the air out of me for the day.
But in that moment there is something to be said about great friends. The ones who see your potential, light and the God in you. The ones with powerful words to speak over you. And it takes experiencing a shift in the moment to really grasp the difference.
My friend told me I’ll be fine. They had no doubt. While I was wallowing in the guilt of not seeing the doctor sooner and being to blame for the consequences affecting a healthy future, my friend was certain I’d be fine.
And as I listened. I felt the shift in my mind. Then my body. Then I made a decision.
I’m going to borrow their faith.
Instead of the fear around my future, I spoke God’s healing.
Instead of feeling bad about what I could’ve done, I gave myself grace for the wisdom I had at the time.
Instead of picturing a broken unhealthy future that weighed on my mind, I redirected my thoughts to a healthy one.
Then I remembered what God had said 2 months before that I had written down: “speak the word of the Lord”
So that’s what I did. Instead of repeating negatives I spoke truth and God’s word. I looked up scripture that had to deal with healing. I repeated scripture that told me not to be afraid. I spoke that I was getting better instead of embracing my bad news.
Be honest: when you are down, what’s the narrative you speak? Believe? Act on?
Does it produce what you want? Or more of what you’d like to avoid?
When I felt that shift I actually felt better.
Now, speaking God’s word into your situation doesn’t guarantee a fairytale ending. But it does increase your faith, it lightens your load, and puts your trust in God. At the end of the day, there is only so much that we can do, and so much more that God can do when we trust Him and release our situation to Him.
Whether you have friends that can remind you to keep faith, or you have sticky notes surrounding your mirror, let this be your sign to shift your words, redirect your thoughts, and move according to God’s truth.
The shift is coming.
