Feeling Off Lately? 7 Ways to Decompress and Reconnect With Yourself

Have you noticed yourself feeling more emotional lately?

Maybe your body feels tense.
Maybe the weight of the world feels heavier than usual.
Maybe your life feels out of order, cluttered, or difficult to manage.
Maybe you’ve been struggling to focus at work, constantly distracted or mentally exhausted.

Maybe, you can’t even get into the warmth that June has brought.

If that’s you, let this be your moment to pause.

Take a breath.
Seriously.
Slow down for a second and check in with yourself.

Have you been giving yourself the opportunity to decompress?

Because sometimes we move through life carrying stress, pressure, noise, responsibility, grief, and overstimulation without ever truly releasing any of it. And eventually, our minds and bodies start sounding the alarm.

I wish I could tell you how to fix all of this in three quick steps. But honestly, this isn’t about “fixing” yourself. It’s about learning how to care for yourself when life feels heavy.

Now, first things first: nothing is wrong with you!

You have the ability to feel deeply, empathize, care, and be aware of what’s happening around you. That is not a curse, it’s a gift from God.

The key is learning to stop beating yourself up for how deeply you feel and instead learning how to work with the way you were created.

So when everything starts feeling overwhelming, here are a few things that help me come back to myself, in no particular order.

Go Outside and Reconnect

Step outside. Feel the sun on your skin. Take a walk without rushing. Spend time with people who make you feel safe and grounded.

Sometimes healing starts with reconnecting to simple things we’ve been too overwhelmed to notice.

Give Yourself Permission to Rest

Have a day that is truly committed to rest—not productivity disguised as rest.

Not every moment needs to be optimized. Your body and mind need space to breathe too.

Stop Automatically Saying Yes

Pause before committing to more.

You are allowed to say: “Let me think about it before I commit.” That pause gives you space to ask yourself an important question: Do I actually have the capacity for this right now?

Not everything deserves access to your energy.

Guard Your Heart and Nervous System

Everything you consume affects you.

Turn off the news for a while if you need to. Listen to calming music. Watch something lighthearted or comforting.

I remember a season where I had to stop watching action movies because my body would become incredibly tense waiting to see what happened next. I didn’t realize how much I was carrying until I finally slowed down enough to notice it.

Pay attention to what your body is responding to.

Reconnect with Things You Enjoy

Do something that reminds you you’re still a person outside of your responsibilities.

Bake. Color. Crochet. Read. Sit in the quiet. Create something simply because it brings you joy.

Joy matters. Especially now.

Nourish Your Body Gently

Feed yourself foods that support your body instead of running solely on stress and survival.

Drink water. Eat nourishing meals. Move your body.

And honestly? Maybe you don’t need an intense bootcamp workout right now. Maybe your body just needs a slow walk and fresh air.

Listen to what you actually need.

Release What You’ve Been Holding In

Give yourself a healthy outlet for all the energy and emotions you’ve been carrying.

Journal. Pray. Move your body. Talk things through with someone you trust.

But don’t let yourself stay trapped in hopelessness. Yes, be honest about what’s heavy but also leave room for hope. End the conversation with prayer. End the journal entry with truth. End the moment reminding yourself that hard seasons do not last forever.

You are not crazy.
You are not failing.
You are not weak for feeling overwhelmed.

You simply need space to release what you’ve been holding.
Space to decompress.
Space to come back to yourself and reconnect with the things that bring life back into your spirit.

And little by little, the heaviness won’t feel quite so heavy anymore.

And then, you can enjoy the Spring and Summer festivities the way they were meant to be.

Scripture of the week:

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”

John 14:27
